When we mention "wearables," most people’s minds immediately jump to smartwatches. However, 2024 was a relatively quiet year for smartwatches, with iterative updates taking center stage. This phenomenon is not uncommon in maturing categories – it’s a trade-off between polished products and the innovative, sometimes misguided, ideas that emerge when a new gadget category is still finding its footing.

The Rise of Smart Rings: A New Frontier

Smart rings are not a new concept, but 2024 marked a significant resurgence for this wearable category. I had a hunch about this trend back in January, when several smart ring manufacturers showcased their products at the CES show floor. This was further solidified by Samsung’s announcement of the Galaxy Ring in February – a move that sent shockwaves through the industry and propelled the smart ring category into the mainstream.

The Game-Changer: Samsung’s Galaxy Ring

Samsung, a major player in the smartwatch space, branching out into an entirely new wearable category is a significant development. The Galaxy Ring has been touted as a revolutionary product that can work in tandem with Samsung’s Galaxy Watches to optimize battery life and sensor accuracy. When paired with a Z Fold 6 or a Z Flip 6, it can even recognize pinching gestures to control the phone’s camera.

While some might view this as a way to lock users into Samsung’s ecosystem, one cannot deny that these are innovative use cases that have not been seen before in smart rings. The Galaxy Ring’s capabilities have set a new benchmark for the industry, and other manufacturers will undoubtedly be looking to follow suit.

Other Innovators in the Smart Ring Space

It’s not just Samsung that’s pushing the boundaries of what smart rings can do. I had the opportunity to test several smart rings, including the Circular Slim and Movano’s Evie Ring. While I didn’t particularly enjoy my time with the Circular Slim, I must give credit where credit is due – it’s a product that thinks big.

The Circular Slim allows users to set silent haptic alarms and engage in in-app AI chatbots. Meanwhile, Movano’s Evie Ring incorporates an open-gap design while pursuing FDA clearance for its metrics. Even Casio has entered the fray with its take on a retro-style smart ring.

A New Era of Competition

The resurgence of smart rings is especially refreshing when considering that Oura has dominated this space for the past decade. Oura primarily focuses on sleep tracking and recovery, but it’s clear that this category is expanding rapidly. With new ideas emerging left and right, competition is inevitable – and beneficial.

Oura has been launching new features at a steady clip and exploring new integrations with continuous glucose monitors. The company has even released its fourth-gen ring, which promises to be more accurate and efficient than ever before.

Challenges Ahead

While smart rings are undoubtedly exciting, they come with their own set of challenges. For one, they’re expensive – often priced similarly to high-end smartwatches but offering fewer features. Additionally, manufacturing smart rings is a complex process that requires precision engineering and miniature components.

Smart ring manufacturers must also contend with the issue of fit – each manufacturer needs to produce 10-12 different sizes to accommodate varying finger sizes as well as seasonal swelling. Watch straps, on the other hand, can be easily adjusted to suit different wrist sizes.

The Future of Smart Rings

While it’s difficult to predict whether this renaissance will continue into 2025, one thing is certain: smart rings have captured the imagination of consumers. I fielded a plethora of questions from curious friends, family members, colleagues, and acquaintances during my summer of wearing six smart rings.

Some expressed frustration with smartwatches and wanted to return to more traditional timepieces like Casio’s iconic watches. Others were drawn to the discreet, beautiful design of smart rings – often opting for them over bulkier smartwatches. A few enthusiasts even sought out smart rings specifically designed for sleep tracking and recovery.

Conclusion

While it’s impossible to predict with certainty whether this renaissance will continue or if we’ll return to Oura being the only game in town, one thing is clear: there is a growing interest in smart rings. Whether they’ll succeed in 2025 remains to be seen – but for now, let’s celebrate the innovative spirit that’s driving this wearable category forward.
